a caricature of God
my dad has the same name as a famous tennis player who shall remain nameless. i think he was still in the spotlight when i was young, but i have a hard time remembering back that far... those were the days when athletic talent mattered more than how the athlete looked on the cover of a magazine. anyway, dad played it up from time to time. once he even got a caricature drawn, the size of his head greatly exaggerated, swinging a tennis racket with some caption and a reference to bobby riggs. so much for remaining nameless...
caricatures are normally humorous drawings, because they take an existing facial feature and exaggerate that feature to ridiculous proportions. certain celebrities are just naturally suited to be drawn in such a way: gw, his goofy grin and ears that remind me of an eight year old ron howard sitting on the lap of andy griffith when he still had some color in his hair; saddam and the saggy jowels, whose mustache rivals only that of tom selleck in his ferrari-driving days, and richard branson, mogul of virgin fame.
in reading this morning, i came across a quote from william shannon, about how we caricature God. we often take a particular aspect of God's character, and exaggerate it to wildly grotesque proportions in an attempt to persuade lesser-read followers to a certain end, or to push ourselves to behaving better, or to beat ourselves up for behaving badly.
A false and illusory notion of God…sees God as someone who is gracious to me when i am good, but who punishes me relentlessly when i am bad. This is a typical patriarchal notion of God. He is the God of noah who sees people deep in sin, repents that he made them and resolves to destroy them. He is the God of the desert who sends snakes to bite his people because they murmured against Him. He is the God of David who practically decimates a people, because their king, motivated by pride perhaps, takes up a census of his empire. He is the God who exacts the last drop of blood from his Son, so that his just anger, evoked by sin, may be appeased. This God whose moods alternate between graciousness and fierce anger, a god who is still all too familiar to many Christians—is a caricature of the true God. This god does not exist. This is not the God whom Jesus reveals to us. this is not the God whom Jesus calls “Abba”.truly, we cannot exaggerate any characteristic of God, because He is an infinite God. His grace is infinite. His wrath is infinite. but for every sin that ever has and ever will be committed, His inifinite wrath has been poured out already, once and for all, on Jesus. for those who rest in Him, there is no condemnation, for He took it upon Himself. right here is the part where we all stand and shout, "Hallelujah!" -- praise God for His infinite grace, His infinite love, His infinite kindness which cannot be exaggerated.
Romans 8:1 [KJV]There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus...

So, if someone was drawing a caricature of your personality...what do you think they would exaggerate?
hi layla :) good question! i believe someone caricaturing(?) my personality, if they really knew me, would probably draw a big-mouthed me, cowering behind a guitar, and frantically searching for my keys; i believe that would signify how hard it is for me to speak out loud when my soul is bare and exposed, and my absent-minded, ADD, forgetful, habitually running almost late, etc. self. how about that?
that's a good question to cause us to self-examine a little. any others care to comment?
before i start getting comments about my personality in reference to a caricature, what i meant to say is:
if someone were drawing a caricature of YOUR personality, what do you think they would exaggerate?
wow, that's a great way to get to know someone, huh?
great post. i'd never really thought about my caricatures of God, or of myself, or for that matter the Church. what would someone draw of me? i'll have to give that more thought. in the meantime i'll just be standing here shouting "Hallelujah!"
cool, bruce, keep shouting to Him who alone is worthy!
When I asked this question I didn't think it may get asked back to me! It does cause some introspection. I think I would be drawn surrounded by hurting people and hurting for them...but at the same time I would be listening to music and reading a book petting my dog and smiling. Is that too much?
So you have ADD? I had a boyfriend with ADD and just when I had finally mastered the art of being patient beyond a reason...we broke up. He was (is) the most interesting, creative, intelligent person I have ever known.
HALLELUJAH!!! (Standing up)
Thank You Jesus!
Thanks rob, that was thought provoking...
layla--he was intelligent until the breakup, right? :P
thanks laurie, that's what i'm talking 'bout!!
Rob, Thanks so much for the insight on the infinate grace vs the chastisement of God. I am the first one to put my hands on the bed and await my spanking. I get confused on the difference between the natural consequences of our sin and the disciplining hand of The Father. I would like to study this to better understand it, if you have anything you could share with me. On the lighter side my caricature would have both a big mouth and a big heart.LOL
Rob, Thanks for all you do at Peachtree!!!
tandy, if you're ever in a bookstore, check out brennan manning, under the christian inspiration section. specifically, i'd start out with "the ragamuffin gospel" which explains in a beautiful poetic style how the gospel applies equally to you and me, to mother theresa and to hitler--that we are all equally in desperate need of the grace of God, then on to "abba's child", which talks about who i am in Christ. powerful stuff! also check out the links in the sidebar on the right, recommended reading: follow the links to have the book shipped to your door. the gospel of grace is a message i am passionate about (if you couldn't tell already)!!
